Kuala Lumpur, 20 July 2019 – In their continuing pursuit to further Malaysia’s creative and entertainment industries, Forest Interactive—alongside organizers, the Malaysian Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC)—participated in Kre8tif @ Schools during the Prize Giving Ceremony at the Komune Co-Working in Bangsar South, Kuala Lumpur.
Kre8tif @ Schools is a program launched by MDEC to usher a new breed of Malaysian animators from the special education sector. As an official partner of MDEC, Forest Interactive sponsored Wacom tablets to speech and hearing-impaired students. These industry-standard tablets are used in animation to bring hand-drawn caricatures to life.
Today’s event marks the final stop for Kre8tif @ Schools—one of 7 organized by MDEC comprising 6 workshops and the awarding ceremony. Last May 20, Forest Interactive delivered a career talk at to 30 students at Sekolah Menengah Pendidikan Khas Vokasional Shah Alam with the goal of pushing more youth to join the growing digital creative industry of Malaysia. A series of animation workshops were also held from May to June for the participants.
Along with Forest Interactive, other industry leaders like Les’ Copaque, Intelek Edu Solutions, and Limkokwing University also shared their insights of life and work in Malaysia’s digital creative industry.
Key speaker and Minister of Communication and Multimedia YB Gobind Singh Deo said that “In order to ensure that the digital economy in Malaysia is expanding, we are not leaving the unfortunate citizen behind. In this digital era, the Ministry of Communication and Multimedia is encouraging Malaysians to build our nations without discriminating.”
Furthermore, the minister sees the potential of the Malaysian digital gaming industry and said that the need to engage the youth to join it is more vital than ever. “Apart from the ability to generate billions of ringgit for the national economy, it can also create employment opportunities, especially for young people,” The minister stated.
As of 2017, Bernama shares that “around 60 digital gaming studios recorded annual exports worth RM600 Million. Malaysia is also known for producing game designers such as Wan Hazmer Wan Abd Halim, lead designer for Final Fantasy XV.”
As part of the company’s corporate responsibility, Forest Interactive remains committed to growing the digital creative and gaming sector to further Malaysia’s digital industry. With the donation of the Wacom tablets, the hope of bringing forth a new generation of Malaysian animators is stronger than ever.
Forest Interactive CEO Johary Mustapha believes that there is an untapped potential in Malaysia’s special needs students. “We believe that while every student is unique in their own way, the need to nurture more future innovators is more important now than ever.”
